Last year this time of the year, I still remember waking up one day at 5 in the morning by accident. Yes, I was never an early riser. I am not sure what woke me up that day so early, but what I do remember is that I have never been able to erase that day off my memory. That day changed my life. I still remember going to bed crying over something I lost and then woke up at 5, quite fresh. So, I decided to just go down and have a cup of coffee while I am already up. I sensed a strange sense of freedom sitting on the couch sipping on my coffee. I could hear the sound of the birds slowly getting louder and that was the time when something struck me and I realised that this is the time to take control of my life. There were people running my life and I didn’t even realise. I had to break free and that morning, my life changed.

Sometimes you just need a moment of realisation that could change your entire life. Mine had arrived. I was in debt, very close to getting bankrupt. I made a plan that morning in the silence of the room. As I was scribbling away my goals and actions I needed to take, trembling, I was thinking to myself that if not now, it will never happen. I decided to change my lifestyle drastically to become debt free and achieve my goals. Since then, I have tried to keep up my excitement and positivity for my goals. I wake up early morning every single day just to sit there with my coffee revisiting my goals and visualising the joy of accomplishment in my eyes when my goals will be achieved.

Last month I stumbled upon a research about why we tend to have more energy and a better self-control at the beginning of the day .The findings are interesting. We have read and seen in a lot of interviews and biographies that successful people start their day early and have early morning rituals. Most of their rituals are focussed around either a fitness regime or reading a newspaper, whatever they do, there is one thing common. They are all early risers.

No drastic change and puffy eyes

I wouldn’t recommend you to finish reading this article and set the alarm to wake you up at 4 in the morning when you are used to getting up at 9.When you take things slow and steady, they are more likely to work for you. Set your alarm clock just 15 minutes earlier than your normal time. Each night, keep going back 15 minutes until you start getting up at a time that suits you.

I know you will hate me for saying this but, I have to… you will have to get into your bed earlier than you normally do. This will make sure you have had enough sleep and you are not tired or sleep-deprived. Again, you have to do it slow and steady. 15 minutes earlier than your normal bedtime.

When you manage to get up earlier than your normal time, you now need a focus. We are all better at doing certain tasks at certain times of the day. Take a moment to think about when  you are the most productive, For example, I have more energy and fresh thoughts early in the morning. So, I tend to write my articles during that time and avoid checking emails or doing any task that does not require much energy.

A major mistake that a lot of people do is preparing a to-do list early in the morning thinking that they are being productive. No, you are not being productive; you are wasting your time by printing what is already in your head. I prepare my to-do list before I go to bed, so, in the morning, a quick glance and I am good to go for my first task.
